Education is one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty and helping children reach their full potential. For more than a decade, the United Way of Western Maine Backpack Project has played a vital role in supporting students and families across Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford counties by ensuring children start the school year prepared and confident.

Each year, the Backpack Project provides backpacks filled with age-appropriate school supplies to students in need. These essential tools help set children up for academic success while easing financial stress for families and reinforcing hope for a brighter future.

In 2025, United Way of Western Maine has set an ambitious goal: to distribute 2,500 backpacks to local students as they head back to school. Community support is critical to meeting this goal.

The need is urgent. Approximately 17% of children in Androscoggin County, 16.3% in Franklin County, and 19.4% in Oxford County live in poverty. Lewiston has the highest child poverty rate in the state, contributing to food insecurity, unstable housing, and other challenges that make it difficult for children to thrive academically and socially.

“Together, we can ensure every child has a strong start to the school year,” said Joleen Bedard, President and CEO of United Way of Western Maine. “A backpack filled with supplies may seem simple, but for a child, it represents readiness, confidence, and the belief that the community cares.”

United Way of Western Maine invites businesses, organizations, and individuals to join the effort by becoming Backpack Project Sponsors and helping make a lasting difference in the lives of local students.
